Residents from several villages in Kakuma, Turkana County, gathered as the Second Kenya Urban Support Programme (KUSP2) national team rolled out a series of community meetings aimed at strengthening land governance and inclusive development in the region.
The KUSP2 National Project Coordination Team (NPCT) visited Kakuma on Monday, May 25, 2026, to conduct sensitization forums on Community Land Registration, land use and development planning, as well as to oversee the election of Community Land Management Committees (CLMCs).
For many residents, the meetings represented more than just official government engagements – they were an opportunity for communities to have a direct voice on how their land will be managed and protected for future generations.
At the gathering, local leaders and area chiefs welcomed the KUSP2 team, urging residents to actively participate in the selection of committee members. The leaders stressed the importance of fairness and inclusivity, noting that every sub-village must be represented to ensure that no community is sidelined in the development process.
“We want every village and every family to feel part of this process,” one local administrator told residents during the meeting. “Development can only succeed when everyone is represented and heard.”
The elected Community Land Management Committees are expected to play a critical role in guiding land registration processes, resolving local land concerns, and supporting sustainable planning within the affected areas.
The KUSP2 team conducted the engagements across several areas in Turkana County, including Kamudei, Lochor Edome, Namon, Nalapatui, Pokotom, Nadapal in Kakuma, Nakayo, Ayanae Angidapala, Oropoi, Lorengo, Kangitesiroi, Lopusiki, Lonyuduk, Lomunyana Kirionok, and Nayanae Emeyan.
Residents who attended the forums expressed optimism that the exercise would help reduce future land disputes while opening doors for more organized development and improved service delivery in the region.
The initiative forms part of KUSP2’s broader efforts to support sustainable urban development, strengthen community participation, and improve land management systems in underserved areas across the country.
